It is extremely frustrating to get to your camping destination and can’t find what you are looking for. It’s even worse when you realize that you have forgotten it all together. Planning for the unknown is a challenge.
Thankfully, cooking gear and utensils are items that you should know that you’ll need prior to leaving your home. Here we’ll discuss some ideas to keep your utensils so that you know where they are and can use when you want.
How To Store Camping Utensils
After decades of camping and some research, there are several common themes when it comes to storage of camping utensils.
- Organization is Everything
- Store Items in a Cool, Dry Space
- Do Not Store in Direct Sunlight
- Use Resealable Bags
- Use Clear Stackable Bins
Organization is Everything
According to The Outbound, having a separate camping tote is ideal. Not only does this prevent you from having to gather items after a long day’s work, but this also prevents you from forgetting items.
While they did not go into detail about a specific type of tote, I would recommend that they are stackable. Having a tote large enough for all your items allows for you to personalize your storage inside of the tote. Unfortunately, totes can get rather heavy, which is why I prefer stackable.
Inside of the totes, I often re purpose items such as toiletry kits or accessory bags and use them for designated purposes. You do not want to throw it all in a duffle bag inside of the tote as that defeats the purpose of organization.
Specialty Organization
According to Love to Know, there are numerous options available when it comes to storage. Whether looking at organizer bags, multi function containers or designated mess kits, there is an option for you.
While I can appreciate this approach, often I have found that when there are straps, pockets, etc that I can’t get what I want in there. Unless we’re talking about a mess kit that comes standard. Even then, you’ll want to add items them more you go camping. I can see how some of these items could take the place of the toiletry kits and accessory bags, but I would still use a tote.
Cleanliness and Care
According to Life Storage, using clear stackable bins is a given. This allows you to be able to see what you have, they are durable, and they seal (to an extent). The last thing you want is rodents or bugs getting into your backpack or duffle full of cooking utensils.
Next, coming back to our first point, buy separate camping supplies if you can. Having all of your supplies separate is what makes a ready-to-go tote. Don’t force yourself to remember to go through your home gathering items before leaving.
Lastly, store your items in resealable bags out of direct sunlight, in a dry and cool area. Having them sealed will keep them clean until you are ready to use them again. Keeping them out of damp, sunny areas will prolong the life of your storage equipment and utensils.

While there may be no exact science as to what works for everyone, I think we can all agree that the above points are a sure way to reduce the stress of packing and repacking of your gear. If you want your gear to stay clean and last longer, it’s the only way to go.
